HORTDESIGN PROJECTS

Floating Meadow, London, June 2022
Temporary exhibition commissioned by a well known fashion brand to highlight the local flora and biodiversity of the Thames river in the South East. A work pontoon of 340m² area was used to build a floating meadow on the Thames. Technical and plant design was produced by HortDesign, Concept Design by others. The core challenge of the design was to create a native meadow through the centre of the installation with heightened embankments around the perimeter of the pontoon. These embankments were indicative of the Thames river flora, displaying various reed species. Multiple pathways were required for the public to navigate through the tall reed embankments towards the concealed flowering meadow.

One Crown Place, London, July 2023
Planting scheme for city centre residential complex entrance.  Client wanted a tropical style scheme with a diverse mix of colours, leaf tones and flowering species.  Although the space was quite shade we met expectations with a lush plant selection for all seasons.

East Sheen, London, Completion April 2023
Small rear garden design in London for professional couple and young family. Client had some basic ideas for a paved area with a bespoke seating unit. With a house extension expected in late 2023 the couple wanted the remaining garden area completed and ready for use in summer 2023. The use of raised white render beds and taller planting gives privacy to the raised patio location. The pergola and seating space is the garden focal point providing a social space for summer months, with extensive lighting throughout the garden will be installed to extend the summer evenings.

Acton, London, Completion June 2023
Small 53m² rear garden design in London for a creative couple and a young family. Clients steered away from a standard urban garden solution opting for an explorative and dynamic garden space. Although the area is limited, the garden packs in many interesting features. During the design process there was multiple changes from the original concept design but the garden maintained its explorative vibe. Gazebo became a sauna, Pergola was removed along with sundial. The design emulates a woodland path with specimen trees, biodiverse plant species, low habit species on steps and pebble paths and between pavers. It aims to be the antithesis to a manicured garden, one that evolves through the seasons with nature at the helm.

Kew, London, Completion TBC 2023
Front Garden update for a family home in southwest London. Client requested simple but tasteful additions to modernise the garden space and to improve the front aesthetic using some traditional Londonesque features such as Victorian mosaic tiling and formal style planting. The addition of a white/light grey porcelain paver for the path, porch step and paved area combines well with the mosaic tiling and existing red brick backdrop. A new side alley gate and front gate will be installed, matching with a new front door. As a cost saving exercise the mosaic tiling was replaced with porcelain tiles to great effect. Planting to be completed autumn 2023.
